Interview with our ReverbNation Winners, Las Vegas Almost Awake!
1. Age and how long in the industry? How is the music scene in your area?
well, the newest & youngest member in our band is fourteen & the oldest member is twenty-one. we’ve been in the music scene/ industry for about three & a half years now.
2. Let's have some fun! What's your Zodiac Sign?
3. What is your main inspirational philosophy in life? Favorite quote and why?
drowsy: i find it best to draw inspiration from day to day things, especially when days are long & tough. i like to remind myself that everything is temporary. the good and the bad. that’s really all there is to it. i’m not too big on quotes necessarily lol my brain is just too small…. i do love twitter tho & there’s a tweet from joey vannucchi of from indian lakes that says: “I’ll never be famous but I’m at peace with a few fans, creative freedom, and enough money to survive.” which i lowkey live by now
kalani: my mantra is “don’t worry about it”
tommy: i’ve never liked to be pushed around. so, whatever comes at me in life, it’s not going to break me. i’ve been through too much, and I still have a vision of who I want to be. i have to keep keeping on! my favorite quote is from tupac: “death is not the greatest loss in life. the greatest loss is what dies inside while still alive. never surrender.”
bryson: when things get tough, i don’t think. my brain just shuts down & i sit in a corner. my favorite lyric is from beartooth: “you say i’m just a loser in the background, i can never seem to get it right, but i’m learning now that my worth is more than your word” because it’s about realizing your self worth even though you have people sitting there trying to drag you down
4. Ok, now...who are YOU as an artist? What is your story?
we are a very,, sad group of people haha & not in like the trendy way. we all found salvation & hope thru music & make songs people like & can relate to so they can feel the same way we felt when we first discovered we could be related to. i think all of us truly understand the power music has & really just want to share it. as corny as it sounds lol.
5. Who are your musical influences and what genre of music would you say your style is?
our music is an interesting blend of influences. as a band we draw inspiration from paramore, pvris, now now, etc but individually it varies widely. we write pretty groovy yet heavy instrumentals with catchy relatable vocals & mind bending guitar solos. but we normally just call ourselves alternative rock lol.
drowsy: paramore, from indian lakes, the neighbourhood, radiohead, the internet, pearl jam
kalani: polyphia, joe satriani, anup sastry, ichika, animals as leaders, intervals
tommy: blink-182, offspring, sum 41, 2pac, parliament, def leppard
bryson: oceans ate alaska, beartooth, within the ruins, gojira, avenged sevenfold
6. What is the state of the music industry right now? Where is it going?
ehhhh, it’s kind of in a weird place right now in my opinion. it’s cool because it’s very artist-focused, and with the internet there are endless opportunities for anyone. literally anyone can make it nowadays which i think is pretty cool. unfortunately enough tho, of course, everthing is about MONEY which is always wack but i personally am excited for the future of the industry.
7. How is your Art “your Religion”?
this is an interesting question haha. as i mentioned before, music to us is a sort of refuge & a place where all is well. i’m not gonna use metaphors & similes to compare playing music to religion & all that but i do believe there is something more profound about it, considering it is one of the only places i’ve ever really been able to find true peace, or be closest to it. BEING an artist is honestly a curse tho lol. because it’s all i think about & contribute to, i never asked for the gift/talent, there is so much responsibility that comes with it, & it’s the only thing that makes me happy. all my gratification & purpose comes from the art & that’s how i consider it a ‘religion’
8. What are you truly creating with your music that changes the world, changes society?
when we write songs, altho we do strive to make it digestable for a wider audience, we really don’t dwell on the perception of the audience. we make songs that we like & that are healing to us, & i think that’s the key. creating something that didn’t exist before & doing it with authenticity & passion, especially when using it as a therapy, adds light to the world. i think that’s kinda the whole point of ART itself. that it can reach others even tho it’s not meant to. i hope our music changes the world (even one person) by making someone happy & changing how they feel even for one moment
9.What is the spiritual, political or social message of your music?
uhhhhhh, this is a good question too! most of our songs are more on the emotional, analytical side of things, rather than taking a stance on anything. our songs tell stories or just express a certain FEELING, which kinda reflects how i am as a person haha. i just have a lot of feelings. like my philosophy for getting thru LIFE, i like to deliver the message that nothing is too deep to get thru & that everything will be ok. my lyrics are,,, hella sad but the fact that i’m still alive & doing what i love is a testimony to that. & i know!! that’s probably corny but i hope that my personal story can reach others & bring them in & encourage them. i hope to eventually write songs about opinions tho, all i do is write about my dumb feelings lol.
10. What do you really think it takes to make it in the music industry? Tell us 3 keys.
work!!!! do the boring stuff & learn to love it because it’s what will take u to the next level
build a team & support others!! the whole industry is built on relationships & who other people know. DIY doesn’t mean you can’t have a team. go to local shows, make friends, pay people for their service & help them out. Etc
don’t be discouraged!!! it is very easy to see others’ success or progress & feel hopeless at times but keep at it (corny)
11. Where do you see your career going in 2019?
we are so excited for next year!!! we have a record coming out soon that we really believe in so hopefully some cool opportunities come out of that!! we trynna get rich lol.
12. Legacy: At the end of the day, how do you want your fans to remember you and your music?
our music is hoped to be remembered as a haven for those going thru hard times which seems ironic since the lyrics really are pretty bummy, but i try to offer some relief because it’s feels good to know that you’re not alone in how you feel yknow? as far as just like, life on the planet, i’d like for us to be known as a group of people that are just very loving & chilled out & care about music & people. also for (me) being the funniest person on the internet lol.
